Puritans in England did not like the Church of England. The Puritans wanted to reform or purify the Church, but the leaders of the Church of England saw no need for change.
Authorities in England began persecuting Puritans by giving them punishments if they were outspoken about changing the church. To escape persecution, the Puritans decided to follow the Pilgrims example and move to America to search for religious freedom.
The King of England awarded a second charter in America to the Massachusetts Bay Company in 1621. Hundreds of Puritans sailed to New England with their leader John Winthrop to set up the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1630, the settlers formed the town of Boston which would go on to become the capital of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
The Puritans did not come for riches or to create wealth. They came to worship freely according to their religious beliefs. What they wanted was a pure Christian Church and a community that would be a model to the world.
John Winthrop used the words "city upon a hill" to remind the colonists of the high religious ideals they must live by and that people, and more importantly God, we’re watching!
In the Massachusetts Bay Colony, religion was at the center of life. Their form of government has been called a theocracy. A Theocracy is a government based on religion and controlled by religious leaders. Puritans were deeply religious and committed to doing God's work in the colony. People were required to attend church and follow the church's rules or be punished by law.
The meeting house was the main building in a Puritan town. It was the most important building in the community, it served as the church, the courthouse, and a community center where local people had a place to conduct business. It was also the site of town meetings where the Puritans exercised the first form of democracy in America when they voted on laws and for local leaders. Participation in town meetings was important for the Puritans because they wanted stability and fair rules for the service of God.
