By the summer of 1788, 11 states had voted to ratify the constitution. Madison had an idea to get the last two states to support ratification. He proposed that a Bill of Rights be added to the Constitution. His idea worked.
The Bill of Rights, made up of the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution. It guarantees many fundamental rights and freedoms that the Constitution did not explicitly state.
The first amendment protects many individual freedoms.
The second amendment guaranteed American citizens the right to bear arms (own guns).
The tenth amendment gives the states any powers not specifically given to the federal government. This amendment satisfied those delegates who feared an overly powerful national government and were more in favor of states rights.
