Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky and raised in Illinois. Lincoln’s love of reading from a young age helped him because he did not have much formal education. His expertise as a militia captain during the Black Hawk War of 1832 stuck with young Lincoln. He chose to study law and become a lawyer instead of finding a career in the military. He was elected to the Illinois state legislature.

Lincoln stated that he would not interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exist. Lincoln also made it clear that his purpose was to preserve the union. The stage was set for the Union and Confederacy to wage war over there right!
His objective: to preserve the union by invading and taking over the south.
Jefferson Davis grew up on a plantation in Mississippi. After graduating from college in Kentucky, Davis attended the famous military school, West Point. Davis fought in the Black Hawk War and the Mexican War.
As a politician, Davis became a US House Representative, a US Senator, and the US Secretary of War.
He had hoped to serve in the Confederacy as a military leader, but he was nominated as President instead.
As President, Davis said hoped for peace between North and South. He even sent a peace commission to Washington DC that was ignored.
His objective: to create a separate republic from the United States by defeating the invading Union Army and establishing legitimacy as the new president of the Confederacy.
What a time to be president! Both new presidents, Lincoln and Davis, took decisive action after Lincoln ignored Davis's peace commission and refused to meet with him. Any attempt at negotiations had failed. What followed was the spark that ignited the Civil War.
