QUEEN ELIZABETH ESTABLISHES VIRGINIA
When Queen Elizabeth took the English throne in the late-1500’s, she wanted her country to become a wealthy empire like Spain.
She sent a group to create a new English colony in North America in 1585. The settlement was called Roanoke and the colony was named Virginia, after the “Virgin Queen,” Elizabeth.
JOHN WHITE AND THE LOST ROANOKE SETTLEMENT
The colony struggled and ran out of supplies. John White, the leader of Roanoke, decided to travel back to England for more supplies but when he returned, everyone, including his family was gone. Their disappearance was a mystery.
SPANISH ARMADA INVASION
Spain was upset when they found out that England was attempting to colonize the Americas. Spain had some other issues with England, and decided to attempt an invasion in 1588 to overthrow Queen Elizabeth.
Spain sent the Spanish Armada, which contained over 130 ships. It was the largest navy in the world at that time. Spain thought they would defeat England easily, but Spain lost and most of their ships were destroyed. After the victory, England began to establish an empire and rise as a new world power and Spain began to decline.
