Our materials are divided into 3 sections, Activities, Mentor Moments, and Individual Learner Journals. These activities are meant to provide a different approach to learning how to successfully incorporate each competency into our daily practice.
Individual Journals are self-guided resources. They are allow learners to reflect, complete improvement activities, and review current advice and suggestions on improving their ability within the competency. The Individual Journals have activities that are independent, but always can use the support of the teacher as the learner begins their learning journey.
Activities are teacher-led activities that can be either group work or individual assignments. They are meant to generate conversation as well as meet the needs of the performance indicators through hands on learning.
Mentor Moments are fun, full body activities that are only intended to take a short amount of time. These activities are intended as introductions, reinforcements, or interventions to meet the performance indicators. They give the learners and the educator a common reference point and encourage deeper conversation.
Pre and Post Assessments have been developed to help facilitators assess students progress as they learn to navigate the competencies. There are several different options for using the pre- and post-assessment that will meet the needs of the students and facilitators.
You will notice there are no true assessments included in the materials. The goal of these materials is not to show a learner they are not capable of being successful in the competency, but instead build confidence and skills to become successful. As the educator you are facilitating this journey and allowing the learners to judge their own success. If you are interested in utilizing the GPEAK pre- and post-assessments visit the “How and When to Integrate” section of this training site.
With all of our materials, our goal is to help young people understand where they are and find success and growth through the program. The pre and post assessments are intended to be a starting point in conversation as well as a tangible piece of self-reflective evidence when having conversations with your learner.
At the beginning of your program (or if you are starting this in your classroom or with a small group of students) we recommend you start with the pre-assessment. Both the learner and the facilitator can take the assessment together for the learner. You can compare your results, see where the discrepancies exist and communicate why they may exist.
At the conclusion of the program, the learner and facilitator would take the post assessment and compare results to see how far the learner has come.
This is in a workbook format that is to be completed by an individual with support from a mentor/facilitator. This may or may not be used within the classroom or training group setting, however it is highly recommended for all learners. There are two versions of the Journal. One is condensed and can be worked on independently. The other version will require sharing documents and activities with the learner. The mentor and individual should meet periodically to discuss questions and monitor progress. The Independent Guided Journal consists of the following sections.
Self-check - Includes a self-inventory and reflection questions based on the performance indicators for that competency.
Case study with reflection questions.
Activities - Individual can complete all or one depending on the needs and wants of the mentor.
Videos and articles - Explanations, supplements, and supports followed by reflection questions.
Pop Culture Connections - These are fun ways to study the competency through a different perspective and without such a personal lens.
Thought Process – Explains the desired behaviors that illustrate the various aspects of the competency.
Self-reflection and inventory revisited – Individual completes reflection. Individual and mentor both complete the inventory to determine if growth has occurred.
These can be used in any combination but are most effective if used in their entirety. Each activity focuses on one or more performance indicators. Additionally, groups may or may not choose to use the Independent Guided Journal.
Self-inventory – Based on performance indicators within the competency. Each individual should complete one if they have not already done so in the Independent Guided Journal. The mentor should provide feedback to each individual.
Case study - Can be a group or individual activity. Either way, there should be a whole group discussion afterward.
Activities and corresponding materials - Each activity is tied to multiple performance indicators as well as other competencies. The mentor can choose to do as many of the activities as possible.
The last set of documents are Mentor Moments. These are brief activities meant to be used for introduction, reinforcement, or intervention. These Mentor Moments give learner and instructor a common reference point. As an example, instructors might refer to one of the Mentor Moments by saying, “Remember when we did the cup stacking activity? How does that apply to this situation?” These Mentor Moments try to be active, artistic, or game-like to provide learners with varying ways to master the concepts. Each Mentor Moment is connected to one or two performance indicators
