A short video introducing participants to the Essential Employability Skills
The Essential Employability Skills, or Competencies as you will see them referred to, are the industry outlined skills that learners need to be successful in the work place.
Updated in 2022 the "Recommended Technical and Essential Employability Competencies" report from Illinois outlines essential employability competencies collaboratively determined with state agencies, industry experts, and professionals from various sectors. These competencies encompass workplace attitudes and skills, linking industry knowledge to personal effectiveness, and serve as quality indicators of an individual’s readiness to enter an industry or to pursue further education.
GPEAK includes five key performance indicators for each of the ten essential employability competencies that unpacks them into explicit actions and behaviors to be taught, observed, and assessed.
The GPEAK materials are designed to give learners access and opportunities to demonstrate mastery of the essential skills. The facilitator guides are the best places to get started with the GPEAK materials. They walk you through the goals of each subsection along with outlines of the different types of resources provided. Not every section will have all of the same materials, but some of the materials will be used/housed in different places. The goal of the GPEAK curriculum is to generate enough materials for learners to demonstrate the actions and behaviors outlined by the performance indicators within the competencies.
Many of the materials provided through this training site are easily manipulated to your needs.
That means - if a scenario doesn't fit, don't use it! These are supplements, they are not intended to be the only right way to engage in the essential skill.
The GPEAK materials provide a framework for how to interact with your learners around these topics.
These materials provide a connection for the educator to engage with their learners on a level playing field, using common language to build shared experiences.
They are shared as Microsoft Word documents so that you can download the materials for use and customize as needed.
Offering badges as incentives helps promote the learning and self reflection that is provided by the GPEAK materials.
