The GPEAK materials are specially designed to be implemented in schools in a multitude of ways. They can be completed as a part of a homeroom scenario where a teacher leads learners through different activities at different grade bands and/or as a whole throughout the year. They can be integrated into a counselor led initiative to increase personal awareness and growth. The options for integration into regular education courses is an opportunity as well. Our ultimate goal is to help all learners find personal success and growth through the GPEAK materials.
This is an individual guided workbook that can be completed independently
Though learners can complete these activities independently, we recommend frequent check-in's with a mentor or educator to help the learners navigate through different activities and interactions.
This may or may not be used within the classroom setting.
If it's used within a classroom setting, it's encouraged that the facilitator leads the groups through the activities then allows for self reflection time as they close the activity.
If the journals are used outside of the classroom, setting deadlines along with meeting times for the mentor and individual to meet periodically to discuss any questions, is encouraged.
Using the individual guided journals is highly recommended for all learners.
The Activities can be used in any combination but are most effective if used in their entirety.
Depending on how much time your school has allotted for the completion of the GPEAK materials, you may select ones that best meet your needs, however we suggest completing them all for the best outcome.
Each activity focuses on one or more performance indicators.
Many of the Activities are supported by use of the Individual Guided Journals (the activity sheets are in the journals).
You may elect to use the journals with your school or not, the activities can be stand alone or used with journal.
Mentor Moments are brief activities meant to be used for introduction, reinforcement, or intervention.
Mentor Moments give the learner and instructor a common reference point.
As an example, instructors might refer to one of the Mentor Moments by saying, “Remember when we did the cup stacking activity? How does that apply to this situation?”
Mentor Moments try to be active, artistic, or game-like to provide learners with varying ways to master the concepts.
Each Mentor Moment is connected to one or two performance indicators.
When educators have a dedicated study hall or homeroom, with a consistent group of learners, that they meet with regularly, implementing GPEAK materials can be integrated as a part of their classroom curriculum.
If the class is multi-grade, we encourage educators to select one topic each year/semester to focus on. As learners cycle through their years they will ideally be introduced to all topics and activities.
Another option for the multi-grade classes is to select what each class will be learning and allow for individualized growth.
These materials are geared towards all levels of learners, however they are especially focused on late high school/early career professionals.
Some schools have learners or groups that work directly with the counseling staff to help grow or develop skills for employability post high school.
If a counselor is interested in hosting a "lunch and learn" or has a group of learners working with them specifically, they can help facilitate the learners through the GPEAK materials. This will present an opportunity for independent work through the Individual Guided Journals with check-ins that are supported by the Mentor Moments.
Some school counselors also are responsible for hosting/promoting ideas and programs. In those situations, the counselor would be the GPEAK trainer (working directly with our program to become a trainer) and then be responsible for tracking the pre and post assessments as well as progression through the materials. If they go through the training and are willing, they can be the ones who issue badges for the learners at their schools.
If there is no dedicated time set aside for GPEAK integration, individual teachers can take the curriculum on as an SEL integration into their classes and can choose to use the different activities or mentor moments to use to help their learners find success with some or all of the performance indicators.
NOTE - this option does not allow for badging as the materials will not be taught to fidelity.
We recommend working with your school or district to completely integrate the program, however, we understand that there are situations outside of teacher control. With that in mind we have created these activities to be able to stand on their own as SEL mini-lessons.
GPEAK curricular resources and assessments are also aligned with the PaCE Framework and can support learners and schools to accomplish activities across grade levels, especially as learners are exploring career interests and learning what the crucial essential skills are for that industry area.
