Today in Fibers and Fabrics, students started the day with some project time to work on their embroidery and cross stitch pieces - ranging from botanicals and bugs, to self portraits and sea creatures. Then this afternoon has been all about monsters! Guest instructor Izzi Hillam taught us how to use knitting machines to make mini monsters out of yarn, felt, and other fun details!
Today, the fabric and textile artists visited Maverick Fiber Arts in Lafayette. Our amazing instructors, Summer and Julie, taught us all about felting. We learned about the different kinds of roving that can be used and the different ways to create both flat and three dimensional designs, and each of us began by creating some felted succulents we planted in our own tiny pots. Afterwards, the speedy workers also made little frogs, flower pins, and even peacock feathers.
Back on campus, we continued to work on our personal projects - there's lots of cross stitch, embroidery, knitting and felting happening!
Today, the textile artists spent the morning working on projects of their own - we had more felting, hat-knitting (complete with pompoms!), and embroidery going on in our classroom.
In the afternoon, we were joined by Claudia Lewis, from Full Circle Art Studio, and we learned about different tie-dying techniques as we made individual bandana and t-shirts. They're bound and wrapped now, but we can't see how they turn out when we rinse and wash them tomorrow!
This morning, the textile artists were joined by Sienna Bosch from Schacht Spindle company. She brought looms with her so we could explore weaving. We learned about warps and wefts and heddles and made a variety of woven material to make into bracelets, dog collars, or trim for other projects (among other things).
In the afternoon, we returned to our independent projects. At home today, we'll rinse and wash the tie-dyed t-shirts and bandanas we made yesterday and see how they turn out!
