Opinion Writing
Davinci has some amazing 4th Grade Opinion Writers! This week we learned the steps to create an opinion opening statement.
Requirements for an opening statement include:
Select a topic- something you strongly believe in.
Ask a question to hook your audience.
Make a bold statement to answer your question.
Paint a picture with words.
Next week students will be bringing their writing home to be proof read by a parent or adult. Students will need to bring back the proof read draft to school on their next Davinci Day to write their final draft.

Standard(s) 4.1.3: Analyze and interpret data from fossils to provide evidence of the stability and change in organisms and environments from long ago. Emphasize using the structures of fossils to make inferences about ancient organisms. Examples of fossils and environments could include comparing a trilobite with a horseshoe crab in an ocean environment or using a fossil footprint to determine the size of a dinosaur. (LS4.A)
Objectives:
I can understand that environments can change over time.
I can compare fossils to living organisms to infer about the type of environments that existed long ago.
Students had an opportunity to visit our classroom fossil lab. Students identified different kinds of fossils. Using a hand magnifying glass helped us take a close look.
"Trilobites are some of the oldest creatures to have ever lived on earth. Current fossil records show that the earliest examples of trilobites likely came around 540 million years ago and went extinct during the Permian period 252 million years ago after a long decline. Trilobites aren’t a single creature but a group of arthropods that flourished during the Cambrian explosion. There are over 20,000 species of trilobite ranging from small to relatively large.
Horseshoe crabs are also incredibly old creatures, although they came about 100 million years after the first trilobites were alive. They are referred to as crabs, although horseshoe crabs are arthropods and aren’t closely related to crabs at all. Unlike trilobites, horseshoe crabs are still alive today, with four known species across the world."
Have you visited Wyoming? Here's a great video explaining how 52 million years ago, Wyoming was once a subtropical environment similar to the Gulf Coast!
Take a trip to visit this very cool place called "Fossil Butte National Monument." I have been there many times and have enjoyed the amazing visitor center and the hike to the quarry.

Overview:
South African music. Students played african instruments while singing. They will begin learning some basic drum patterns. Students will listen to folktales from Africa.
Parents, I have been working on building a new webpage and it is still under design. My hope is the webpage will be easy to read and follow each week. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. I love teaching your amazing humans!
Love,
