World Languages


Students planning to enroll in a 4-year college/university are strongly encouraged to take three (3) years of the same foreign language.


Spanish I

Length: 2 semesters

Credit: ½ per semester (Practical Art)

Prerequisite: None Fee: None

This course is an introduction to the Spanish Language focusing on the three modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational. Students will also be exposed to a variety of culture topics. The course is aimed at students who plan to attend college and required at least thirty minutes of studying per day. NCAA approved.

American Sign Language I

Length: 2 semesters

Credit: ½ per semester (Practical Art)

Prerequisite: None Fee: None

American Sign Language is a manual language which entails vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and body movement to express meaning for communication. Lessons or units include cultural aspects to help the student understand and interact with the Deaf. Students are introduced to these aspects in units, which are ordered in a manner to build upon the previous units. Lessons are structured around language needed for common life situations.

Spanish II

Length: 2 semesters

Credit: ½ per semester (Practical Art)

Prerequisite: Spanish I Fee: None

This course is a semi-immersion class allowing students to continue language study in the three modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational, to increase fluency in the language.

Students will continue to interact with a variety of cultural topics. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO HAVE THEIR OWN SPANISH-ENGLISH DICTIONARY. NCAA approved.

American Sign Language II

Length: 2 semesters

Credit: ½ per semester (Practical Art)

Prerequisite: ASL I Fee: None

American Sign Language II will continue to build language skills in the areas of vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and body movement to express meaning for communication. Students will work to improve their fluency, vocabulary, and grammar skills. Lessons or units include cultural aspects to help the student understand and interact with the Deaf.


Spanish III

Length: 2 semesters

Credit: ½ per semester (Practical Art)

Prerequisite: Spanish II Fee: None

Conducted mostly in Spanish, this course allows students to review and apply previously-learned material in a more rigorous context. Students will also move on to more advanced vocabulary and grammar. Many units will be built around cultural topics, allowing students to continue their cultural studies while using the target language for an authentic purpose. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO HAVE THEIR OWN SPANISH-ENGLISH DICTIONARY. NCAA approved.

Spanish IV

Length: 2 semesters Credit: ½ per semester

Prerequisite: Spanish III Fee: None

This course reflects the commitment to our student-centered, proficiency based language learning environment. Students will be presented with a wide variety of authentic language in context, through music, fiction, and non-fiction texts. This course allows students to research cultural topics that interest them, submerge themselves into a communicative environment through the 3 modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO HAVE THEIR OWN SPANISH-ENGLISH DICTIONARY. NCAA approved.
