Honors English I

Honors English I is an accelerated course for freshman capable of in-depth study of literary structure and purpose. The course requires that students have a strong background in reading and writing as well as the capability and motivation to manage and complete multiple independent studies throughout the year. NCAA approved.

American Literature

Length: 2 semesters

American Literature focuses on the time period between colonization through present day. The literature found throughout the development of the United States serves as a foundation to the course in reading, writing, and research study. NCAA approved.


Advanced Placement English Language and Composition

Length: 2 semesters

Prerequisite: English I & English II Fee: AP Exam Fee (exam optional for possible college credit)

AP English Language and Composition engages students in becoming skilled readers of non-fiction text, written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts, a well as becoming skilled writers, who compose for a variety of purposes. Students will learn to be cognizant about how conventions and rhetorical strategies impact the author’s purpose, as well as to fully understand the textual relationship among subject, purpose, and audience. Students will write several analytical, argument, and synthesis essays to fully meet the requirements of this course. This accelerated course necessitates a high level of daily preparedness and independent study. Successful students will possess strong English/language arts skills. NCAA approved.

British Literature

Length: 2 semesters

Prerequisite: American Literature or AP Language & Composition Fee: None

This course presents a chronological study of English literature and is the recommended English class for the college bound student. Content of this course will include English literature, essay development, research study, and vocabulary skills. NCAA approved.

Ap English LIterature is an accelerated course for students who are dedicated to an in-depth study of English literature. The course is conducted in a seminar format, which necessitates a high level of daily preparedness and independent study. NCAA approved.

Contemporary Literature

Length: 1 semester Credit ½ credit (English)

Prerequisite: English II Fee: None

In contemporary Literature, students will study contemporary literature confronting modern day themes around the globe. Challenging issues may or may not include: domestic violence, slavery, political unrest, human sexuality, racism, terrorism, mental illness, and poverty. Additionally, vocabulary development, grammar, research, and analytical writing will be addressed. For students planning to attend a four-year college, this is a recommended course. Note: Students who take Contemporary LIterature must also sign up for an additional semester of English.


Creative Writing I

Length: 1 semester Credit: ½ credit (English)

Prerequisite: English I Fee: None

This course covers freewriting, writing figuratively, journaling, and writing in several forms of poetry, using a variety of techniques. Students will enhance their creativity through daily journaling and learn to overcome writer's block through stream of consciousness exercises. In this course, students will experiment with various forms of poetry, figurative language, and sound devices, as well as developing their individual voice. NCAA approved.

Creative Writing II

Length: 1 semester Credit: ½ credit (English)

Prerequisite: Creative Writing II Fee: None

This course covers journaling, popular genres, short story, non-fiction personal memoir, and basic scriptwriting. Students will enhance their creativity through daily journaling and learn to overcome writer’s block through stream of consciousness exercises. In this course, students will experiment with various forms of figurative language and fiction genres. Creative non-fiction will be explored through personal memoir techniques. Students will identify elements in various genres, learn short story elements and techniques to create meaningful and entertaining stories, and learn how to turn those stories into drama scripts and screenplays. NCAA approved.

Essentials for Writing

Length: 1 semester Credit: ½ credit (English)

Prerequisite: None Fee: None

This semi-self-paced course is designed to help students with basic composition skills. This includes essay writing, short-constructed response, and grammar skills. Students will receive one-on-one help with writing assignments from other classes, peer-reviews, and instruction in grammar and essay writing.

Science Fiction Literature

Length: 1 semester Credit: ½ credit (English)

Prerequisite: English I Fee: None

In this course, students will explore major science fiction authors and their works and learn how science fiction influences the scientific world, and in turn, how science influences science fiction. Students will analyze the impact of science fiction on society and the human experience as a whole through journal topics, discussions, documentaries, science fiction movies and television classics, and science fiction novels. Students will be required to read three science fiction novels for this course. Students will also be encouraged to independently explore areas of interest within the genre and discuss controversial social and political issues as themes of science fiction. NCAA approved.


Speech

Length: 1 semester Credit: ½ credit (English)

Prerequisite: English I & English II Fee: None

This course introduces students to theories and practices of oral communication, including verbal and non- verbal modes. Students will deliver a variety of impromptu/extemporaneous speeches, oral interpretations, informative speeches, persuasive speeches, and speeches to entertain in front of an audience of their peers. Although the class primarily focuses on public speaking and presentation, students will demonstrate competency regarding idea generation, development, and organization via written modes, including note cards, bullet points, outlines, and scripts. Some additional writing, reading, and research methods are also required. NCAA approved.


World War 2 Literature

Length: 2 semesters

Credit: ½ credit per semester (English)

As an English literature elective this course is available to students who need to earn an English credit or elective credit. As a standards based course, it is designed to improve student abilities in the areas of reading, writing, and speaking.

The course material focuses on literature from World War II, including the Holocaust. Subjects covered are: pre-war and post-war Germany, the effects and intricacies of the Holocaust, British and US involvement, Japanese involvement, Soviet involvement and long-term effects, and American internment camps for Japanese, German and Italian citizens of America. Students will also investigate modern social injustice issues and other historical genocides on a comparative level. The literature covered will be all non-fiction biographical and historical literature.


Yearbook

Length: 2 semesters

Credit: ½ per semester (Elective credit only)

Prerequisite: None Fee: None

Yearbook is a year-long course in which students are responsible for the marketing and production of the high school yearbook. Students must be able to meet deadlines, sell advertising, and work will independently or with a group. Good writing skills are necessary; some photography experience and good computer skills are very beneficial. After applications are reviewed students will be contacted if they are selected. English Editing and Revision is an innovative accelerated course for Juniors and Seniors who are capable of positive, informative and beneficial feedback of writing modes in Language Arts and Literature. The course requires that students have a strong background in reading, writing, and grammar skills.
