Why SUP there?
It can be a casual ride for an intermediate or advanced paddler. It’s a good chance for a beginner to work on their stroke.
It’s free to park and to access the river.
You don’t need a Discover Pass.
You will paddle against a current coming back, but it’s not as strong as it is by No-Li.
This is a nice part of the river to explore.
Overview: This was my third to the Spokane River this year. It was a fun outing for my buddy JD and me. We attempted to head upstream to navigate some awesome rocks jutting out of the water, but the current was too strong so we headed downstream.
Where we parked and launched: Follow My Get Out Spokane Map to the parking lot named, “The Islands Trailhead.”
There's a huge parking lot just off of Upriver Drive, below the Arbor Crest Winery.
The water is clearer and cleaner here than downstream.
Beautiful homes and yards line the river.
This portion of the river is quite pristine with few houses lining the bank.
After determining we couldn’t paddle upstream due to the overwhelming current, we made a 180 degree turn and headed downstream. The river is wide at this point and easy to navigate. This is a cleaner part of the river with fresher water. It’s a good place to jump in when it’s hot. There are several beaches at which to stop in order to take a break. After making your turn back upstream, you’ll face a current, but one that’s not too difficult to navigate. If you paddle closer to the shore, you can often have an easier time making progress upstream.
This is another awesome ride on the Spokane River. I can’t wait to return to the area when I can travel upstream to the rocks that protrude out of the water. It’s as if you’re on another planet.
