Overview: This was my first trip to the Spokane River this year, which is much later than normal. Logically, my first trip was the one I take most often, below my house in the Northwood housing development.
Where we parked and launched: Follow My Get Out Spokane Map to the gravel parking lot east of Boulder Beach. There are concrete barriers at the base of the bank. Walk down the path to launch your SUP.
Just after launching, the view east.
The Millwood Bridge.
Beautiful homes and yards line the river.
I paddle board here more than anywhere else in Spokane simply due to the fact that it is 5 minutes from my house in Northwood. As you head east, you will see houses on both sides of the river accompanied by various types of trees and other foliage. It can be quite beautiful, especially in the fall. The ride is often a peaceful one and takes a little more than an hour for the trip. The water is normally calm and smooth which makes it a great place for beginning paddle boarders.
If you’re looking to access a SUP location for an hour long ride or more, and paddling in smooth, calm water is for you, then this is a great option. The river is cool enough that it can be refreshing to jump in, although it is recommended that you not ingest the water due to its metal content. My wife, the dogs (in their brand new life jackets) and I recently took this ride in the afternoon and after paddling to the bridge, we tied our boards together and floating back towards Boulder Beach while enjoying a snack and a beverage. It made for a unique and fun excursion!
