Where? Newman Lake, Washington. Here’s the link to my “Get Out Spokane” Google Map with this and all previous destinations charted. When: August 2018
Getting into the Water: Follow Google Maps to the Newman Lake boat launch. You will need your Discover Pass to park here. There is a large parking lot and you can walk right down the cement launch pad to the water.
Describe the Ride: Newman Lake brings back fond memories for me as my grandparents had a cabin on the lake some 40 years ago. The lake and its shores have changed considerably since then and it definitely looked different to me as I mostly viewed the lake solely from my grandparents bay. The lake is easy to access from the public launch which is located on the southeastern portion of the lake. I traveled to Newman Lake on a weekday and I didn’t have to deal with much boat traffic. I was amazed at the number of cabins on the lake as well as impressed by the updating many people have done to the properties. I wasn’t aware of the many bays located on both the eastern and western side of the lake. I’m glad I made the trip to Newman Lake because it made me realize that it truly is a nice place nestled in the northeastern portion of the greater Spokane area, about 5 miles from the Idaho border.
Heading along the northeastern shore of Newman Lake. Tons of cabins have been built here in the last 30 years or so.
Trees and lilly pads surround the lake.
More trees and cabins as I headed counterclockwise around the lake.
Newman Lake is another great place to take a group of friends, paddle out to a quiet bay, crank some tunes, jump in the water and relax. It’s not a huge lake so you can paddle the perimeter of it in a couple hours at a good clip. I would say the water quality has improved over the years as well. I did jump in to cool off, and the water wasn’t as warm as anticipated for early August. If you are looking for a cabin at a price, that I would imagine is significantly lower than Coeur d’Alene or Priest Lake, Newman Lake might be a good place to look. If you simply are looking for another place to spend a few hours getting some exercise and fresh air, definitely make the trip to Newman Lake!
