PASTOR C. FOSTER PAYNE

I wanted to share something with you that happened to me recently.

I was at the Nashville VBS Preview and had a chance to duck into a modern worship service, complete with lights, fog, loud music... the works. This worship service style is not normally my “cup of tea,” but I made a conscious decision to put myself aside and put God first. It was an amazing experience. Not because of the supposed "show." Not because of the quality or even the atmosphere.

Because of surrender.

I watch all of you from the platform every week. In some of your faces I see excitement, some boredom, some anxiousness. It makes my heart glad when I see those of you who are going through a truly difficult time in your life put that aside and worship. I see some of you start to truly respond to the Lord’s call on your heart in a way that is totally natural for you (yep, I see those of you in the back raising your hands and moving with the beat!), only for you to freeze up when you think someone might be watching. And I see some of you who seem determined to not be moved at all.

Seeing all this and knowing my own insecurities and preferences, it makes me wonder how often we are our own biggest obstacles to our engagement with God. "All to Jesus I surrender. All to Him I freely give." To put it another way: "Leave behind your regrets and mistakes. Come today, there's no reason to wait. Jesus is calling."

“If you don’t worship… you’ll never experience God.”
