Many of us can say we grew up watching Disney movies and shows. For most children, it was an integral part of their childhood - anything from Mickey Mouse to Disney princess classics. One of the most well-known fairytale stories is that of Cinderella. Whether you’ve seen or read the Disney version, any of the countless revamped or “modern” versions, or the true original (that one is a little less child-friendly). This year, our high school drama department is ecstatic as we prepare to present our production of Cinderella, a musical that truly keeps some of that classic childhood Disney-esque magic alive.
If you aren’t a fan of princesses and children’s stories, fret not, as this show has a bit for everyone. While it’s still a show based around whimsy and wonder, it also incorporates elements of humour, and most of all, quite interesting wardrobes. It can’t be disputed that the costumes for this show are quite different from past productions.
Now, whether you have or have not seen Cinderella (in one of its many forms), allow me to introduce you to some of its characters: Of course, you likely know Cinderella’s stepmother, known to the people of the kingdom as “Madame”, she mistreats Cinderella throughout the story and is shamelessly unafraid to play favorites with her children. Next, why not discuss the step-sisters? Charlotte, daughter of Madame and quite like her in most ways, except - she never can seem to please her mother. She’s zany, dramatic, and underappreciated… what a combination! Gabrielle, the pretty and unassuming sister to Charlotte, seems to follow in the footsteps of Madame and Charlotte, but perhaps it’s because she has something to hide…? The Prince, of course, seems practically perfect, except for his Declaration of Independence-length name. Oh- and the fact that he’s oblivious to what is happening in his kingdom, though some of that is the fault of Sebastian, a corrupt noble and advisor to Prince Topher. Don’t forget about Jean-Michel, the firebrand with a passion for political revolution. He wishes to see justice and peace secured for all. Marie, a kooky old lady living in the town with Cinderella and her family, might have more to her than meets the eye. Or not. I mean, what kind of town doesn’t need an old lady who is simply completely bonkers? Now, who could forget about the main character herself - Ella? “Cinderella”, a name given to her by her stepmother, has always been kind and selfless. No matter what abuses she endures, she stays optimistic and retains her pure heart, as she learns that the impossible and improbable may come true just when you need them to.
