DECA is a club dedicated to preparing students for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. However, DECA is not only a business club, but an opportunity to “meet people, build real-world skills, and challenge yourself,” states the DECA advisor, Ms. Foufas. She mentions there are three words to describe the club: empowering, the students gain confidence; challenging, pushing students outside of their comfort zone; and impactful, teaching skills that remain with them after high school. Ms. Foufas also notes how she enjoys watching students grow in ability and confidence, her favorite part being when they are trying new things and realize they are “more capable than they thought,” in terms of presenting, competing, or enhancing their leadership skills.
So far, DECA has participated in the Carle Place Trunk or Treat, Adelphi Apprentice Business Challenge, and the DECA regional competition. Another substantial event, the State Competition, is coming up in March 2026 where five students will be representing Carle Place: Isabella Cezario, Emily Cunha, Aiden Kalantarov, Michael Seglin, and Justin Powers. These activities put “students in real-life situations where they have to communicate, problem-solve, work with others, and think on their feet,” added Ms. Foufas. Through these taught skills, competitions help students become strong and confident leaders.
To make the most out of a student’s DECA experience, Ms. Foufas advises to put in their best effort and not be afraid of failing or trying something new. “Say yes to opportunities,” even if they are initially uncomfortable. It is important to take the lead within the club, to go beyond what is required. DECA becomes more meaningful when everyone actively participates and supports each other. According to Ms. Foufas, “The more effort you put in, the more you will gain. DECA is truly what you make of it.”
Note for future members: “Just go for it. You don't need experience, just a willingness to learn and try. It is not just a business club! DECA is a great way to meet people, build real-world skills, and challenge yourself. You might be surprised by how much you enjoy it and how much you grow.” - Ms. Foufas
