The National Honor Society is known for recognizing students who demonstrate strong scholarship, leadership, service, and character. According to the NHS advisor, Mrs. Foraker, the members of the honor society can be described using three words: “kind, smart, and motivated.” Even though Mrs. Foraker has only been the advisor since September, she has already seen the leadership and character this society emphasizes by dedicating their time to tutor middle school students in the library and the officers rising to meet their roles. Many of the members were in her students back in 8th grade, so watching them mature and give back to the community has been one of her favorite parts of being the advisor of NHS.
There have been certain moments that have already made her proud, even in her short time as advisor. One of them is the members' willingness to donate their time to volunteer at the Trunk or Treat event on a Saturday, where they gave out candy and put “temporary tattoos” on the children.
If she could change one thing, it would be when new members are inducted. She hopes to have students inducted in the fall of their junior year rather than the spring. This way, students have a year to “see what they should expect in the National Honor Society” before running for office. It would also give them some time to gain experience and confidence as part of the society.
Looking ahead, she would also like to expand service opportunities. Many clubs in the school offer community service; she believes that combining forces with other groups/clubs can be a meaningful option
The Carle Place High School National Honor Society follows qualities set by the national organization: character, leadership, service, and scholarship. Currently, in order for students to request consideration they must achieve a 90 academic average while also providing they fulfilled the leadership and service requirements as well between 9th and 11th grade. They must maintain these requirements during their time in the society to be recognized at graduation with an honor cord. Mrs. Foraker believes that being a member in NHS helps students grow as leaders because members learn to manage various responsibilities and they learn to build awareness of diverse learning styles while also building mentoring skills that may help them in a futur job or team.
She also mentioned that previous advisors, Mrs. Lorandini and Mrs. Sullivan, set up a great framework for the society. She has made small adjustments to help things run more smoothly for her during her time as an advisor.
Note for current NHS members: “Check your emails daily - communicate better by checking Google Classroom and Remind notifications to stay up date on announcements. :) ” - Mrs. Foraker
Note for future NHS members: “For students who want to be inducted, start thinking about academics in 9th and 10th grade. In this society, you must continue to keep your academics up, and take the initiative to provide service for the community that might take some time away from your schedules, such as sports and other clubs, but it will benefit you greatly in life.” - Mrs Foraker
Overall, she looks forward to seeing the club grow and continue to serve the Carle Place community in meaningful ways!
