Introduction
Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest of the engineering disciplines and one of the most broad. Mechanical engineering focuses on the design, production, and operation of machinery, however, the machines that are being designed can be as simple as a lever or complex as a car engine. Converting Ideas Into Finished Products
Concept sketches are used for conveying ideas and concepts to another person, but often do not contain enough information to reliably and consistently create a product. For example the concept sketch below is detailed and well proportioned, but does not provided any information about the size of the log cabin, it would be difficult for different manufactures to create the same product if the concept sketch was the only document provided.
A different style of drawing is required to convey enough information to accurately recreate the log cabin, this style of drawing is often called drafting or technical drawing. One method that could be used to clarify the drawing is by providing the measurements for the individual pieces of the cabin (see below) which provides information about the scale of the cabin.
In this unit you'll learn how to accurately and consistently measure objects as well as two types of technical drawings (drafting) which can be utilized to convey your ideas to others.
1) Isometric
2) Multiview
