Smart Phones, clothes, and video games are just a few products that are familiar to most people. What is it about any of these products that you like? What causes you to want to buy the newest technology? Is it the commercials or the appearance of the product? Whatever the reason, design plays a vital role in the creation and marketing of any product.
The first step to design is to understand the Problem we are trying to solve and who we are solving it for. We can capture this information in a Design Brief. In this lesson, 1.3 - Carnival Game Challenge (ENET), we will create a designbrief to help us better understand the problem we are trying to solve.
Review and take notes on the following presentation.
Often times, the way in which we frame the design or the problem can effect the solution we propose, so it is important that the design brief that we make is created well. To understand this better, review and take notes on the following video on Innovation.
All designs start with an understanding about constraints. Wether is it Time, Materials, or Physics, constraints will dictate the design. In this video let's try to get a better understanding of what constraints are and why they are important to designers.
In this activity we will create a design brief, build a Ball Launcher and Document the Process, the constraints, the design trade-offs and the Results. The complete Activity write up is below. Additionally, there is a link to the Engineering Notebook Template. Copy the text of this document to the top section of your own engineering notebook.
E111.01 - I can explain and apply the Engineering and Design Process to solve design problems, including product concept development and simple dynamic mechanical designs.
4: Excelling
I have created an acurate Design Brief then Brainstormed, and prototyped a solution to the design challenge. I documented my work with a quality Video and answered all of the Conclusion Questions correctly.
3: Proficient
I have created an acurate Design Brief then Brainstormed, and prototyped a solution to the design challenge. I also answered all of the Conclusion Questions correctly.
2: Developing
I have completed more than 70% of the following Items.: I have created an acurate Design Brief then Brainstormed, and prototyped a solution to the design challenge. I also answered all of the Conclusion Questions correctly.
