Math in Fuel Efficiency

Fuel has stored potential energy. Fuel efficiency is the ratio of energy relieved to the amount of work it achieves. Good fuel efficiency would use less fuel to produce more work.

There is a lot that goes into making a car fuel efficient. At its base, it comes down to how efficiently fuel energy is converted into useful work.

The main factor in the way of fuel efficiency is friction. The more friction you have, the more force that is needed to move the vehicle, the more fuel you need to consume. Car manufacturer have to take things like friction between the tire and the road or friction on the axle into consideration when designing a vehicle.

Fuel consumption is also effected by a lot of factors that occur in the real world and are unable to test in a lab such as traffic and additional weight that you might add to your vehicle.
