Getting ready for your first face to face session....

You are starting your course in the City Lit building, below are some tips on getting ready for your first session. (See Unit 8 for getting ready for teaching online).

Firstly, make sure you arrive in good time to get your room set up (at least 10 mins beforehand if possible).

Turn on the computer early and load any powerpoints

Set out any resources or materials that learners will need before the class starts

Pay attention to room layout and move chairs if necessary. Avoid having learners spread out randomly in the room with spaces in between. Arrange the chairs so they form a circle - or if this is not possible owing to numbers - a horse shoe in two or three rows. On some courses, you may want to arrange learners in groups around tables.

Learners will naturally gravitate to the back or apart from others on a first session, you may need to ask them to move.

It greatly enhances a sense of cohesion and groupness if learners can see each other and you.

Check everyone can see the screen and/or whiteboard if you are using these.
