My culminating project is about the beauty standards, specifically about how toxic and dangerous it is to teenagers just like me. My goal is to spread awareness about this issue, as well as help change teenager's outlook and mindset to not value themselves based on the beauty standards.
My Smart Goal
Specific
What am I doing? Spreading awareness about the toxicity and dangers of the beauty standards are and to change teenager's outlook and mindset to not value themselves based on the beauty standards.
Why am I doing it? A lot of teenagers, including myself are affected by this issue, which makes us have lower our self esteem, self confidence, devaluing ourselves, or even develop unhealthy relationships with food.
Measurable
How will I know I have succeeded? What are the indicators?
To know if I have succeeded in reaching my goal, there are three factors that decides this, which are:
- First is that I have at least around 20 people attending my webinar.
- Second is that people understands the information I'm delivering, are interactive, and enjoys attending my webinar.
- Third is that I’m able to finish everything, which includes the activities and webinar presentation for my action before the deadline (which is before the term break).
Attainable
How can I make it happen? Is it achievable?
To make it happen I need to do expert interview, surveys, a lot of deeper investigation and research, create the materials needed for the webinar, and create a campaign for my webinar, which are all achievable.
Relevant
How is the goal relevant to your problem and interest?
I have always been someone who is interested with topics surrounding beauty standards, as I would often watch videos that surround this topic, such as the discussion of what are the new trendy facial features or about how dangerous this body trend is.
Time based
When exactly do I want to accomplish my goal?
I want to accomplish my goal according to the CP timeline, which according to the CP timeline, the time to do our action is before the term 3 term break.
My process in identifying my audience:
My topic is about beauty standards, so when I was deciding, I had to take to an account of which age group was most affected by this issue. The age group that is most affected by the beauty standards are teenagers, which led me to decision to make teenagers my targeted audience.
My challenges to get in touch with my audience:
I didn't really faced many challenges to get in touch with my audience, as most of the people around me (such as classmates and friends) are my target audience. This makes it easier for me to get responses to fill in my research survey, feedback survey, and find my audience for my webinar.
What is one unique insight that you learned from speaking to your audience?
At the beginning of my CP journey, I did a survey about what people understand about the beauty standards. What's interesting or unique is that the majority of adults don't agree that the beauty standards are still within our society today and say that they aren't affected by the beauty standards. However for the majority of teenagers they agree that the beauty standards are still within our society and agree that they are affected by it.
Did your interviews change your perspective on the issue?
When I did my expert interview with Tante Sania (psychologist), I found out the reason why teenagers are more affected by the beauty standards then adults. Which is because teenagers are usually still trying to find their sense of self and identity, as well as usually still focusing on their appearance and are still easily convinced by social media, therefore they tend develop insecurities about themselves. Adults usually don’t because they have different focuses in life than teenagers.
Crazy Eight Ideas:
A podcast where people can share their experiences with the beauty standards (and eating disorders).
An Instagram campaign showcasing information relating to the beauty standards.
A campaign event that is in a form of a "Ted Talk" and have many activities alongside, relating to the beauty standards.
An online community where people can share their experiences with the beauty standards.
A blog that shares people's experiences with the beauty standards.
A documentary about the beauty standards and eating disorders.
A webinar (either online or offline) about the beauty standards that includes interactive activities.
A fundraiser that will have games, activities, and sell products that promotes body positivity & neutrality to combat the beauty standards.
What is one thing that is currently causing you to stress about your project? Having to do assignments from other subjects, studying for semester exams (IGSCE exams), and worry if my product is not going to exceed my expectations.
In the testing test phase, I made a survey for my webinar slide and activities planned for the webinar, in order get feedback, to find out if my product needs to be improved in some areas. I did my survey through google forms and got a total of 33 responses.
To summarize the survey results, the majority of responders from the survey said:
- They said that by adding activities into my webinar, it made it much more interesting and enjoyable for the audience to participate in.
- They thought that the design of my webinar was already fitting with the theme of beauty standards and was already generally good. However, there was a comment from someone saying that it was too bright and that I should make the colors softer, which I agree with.
- Generally all the topics that I will provide in my webinar were already good, but they also said I could add more about the negative effects, negative coping mechanisms to avoid, and also how social media is involved with our beauty standards.
Improvements I made based on my testing survey are. . . changing the entire color scheme of my webinar slides, from a more pink or peachy color palette to a more lilac or lavender one. I also decided to add more information in my webinar slides about the negative coping mechanisms to avoid and how social media is involved with our beauty standards.
The challenges I faced in creating your prototype are. . . finding the right elements, layout, and color scheme for my design and managing my time to complete my final product and other assignments.

In this activity, the audience were given 2 piece of post it, one to write words of affrimation for themselves and one to write for a friend (or friends).
In this activity, I asked the audience to write what they think are the current beauty standards.
