MY SMART GOAL
Specific : To make sustainable clothing stores more accessible to people and reducing clothing waste by making a small online clothing shop that sells clothing made from used fabrics and clothes. I am making this so there are less clothing waste and so that people can buy sustainable clothing.
Measurable : I will track my progress by doing a journal and maybe share my progress through a social media account to also promote the store. Since my goal is to make a upcycled small clothing store, first I will make the plan for it, then I will prepare the things needed for the project and lastly open the store.
Relevant : This goal is important because the issue is really important. Fast fashion is harming the environment and we need to solve this problem. Since I can’t convince every fast fashion store to stop doing what they are doing, trying to make people buy less fast fashion and reduce the clothing waste is the best I can do. Hopefully, my store can help make less clothing waste and help the environment.
Time based : I will follow the timeline for culminating project for this because I don’t want to do things too late or too early.
For Empathizing, I did some research on fast fashion and found that:
A lot of clothing are polluting the water
Because of fast fashion there are many un-used clothes that are being thrown away
Our country is one of the largest clothing producers and consumers
A lot of people still don't know about this issue
It is still hard to find sustainable fashion brands here
Other than research and survey, I also did an interview with the co founder of Setali. I found out that fast fashion is bad for the environment and workers. She also said that doing the 4 R (Reuse, Reduce, Repair, Recycle) is a good way to be sustainable.
Every time we go to malls we always see fast fashion stores. It is really hard to find clothing businesses that aren’t harming the environment. As a student, I can’t convince the whole fashion industry to stop fast fashion. So I will make a small clothing brand that sells upcycled clothing. I actually had this idea a while before we started culminating project.
First I made a few sketches for the designs of the clothes and bags. I originally planned to make shirts, vests, skirts, and bags.
Then I started collecting used clothing from my family and also from my own closet.
My first prototype was a pink star shirt made from my old shirt and a pink shirt that I cut up into a star. It looked pretty messy because I had to make it on my own and the fabric was hard to work with.
Then I made some bags, pouches, and more shirts. This time I asked a tailor to sew the clothes for me because my sewing machine broke.
I made a google form and asked people what they thought about my designs and I got a lot of feedback about the colors (since I mainly used black, white, and blue) and the cutting.
So I made more shirts with more colors and also some pants.
