Welcome to Media Studies! Using your knowledge of TV, film, print and digital as a starting point, Media Studies will enable you to grow your knowledge to help you produce original pieces of work, while exploring the channels of mass communication in more depth. Whether you are analytical or creative, media studies provides opportunities for you to develop your creativity and learn new practical skills in the production of your own media texts, whilst engaging with something that truly interests you. You will be able to analyse how the media represents different groups, while also have the opportunity to focus on specific areas of the media that interests you through research projects that combine theory and practical production.
Media Studies at a glance
In the first year we will cover...
Advertising and marketing (film marketing, charity adverts, print adverts)
Newspapers (The Times and Daily Mirror case study)
Music video (Riptide by Vance Joy and Dream by Dizzee Rascal)
Radio (Late Night Woman's Hour)
We will also start on your non-exam assessment (coursework) which will be a creative project, responding to a brief released next March.
How do we approach these media 'texts'?
We will apply what is called the 'theoretical framework' - different ways of looking at media. Some units focus on particular areas, others use all of the framework. This includes;
Media language - how are different elements of the text used to communicate meaning to the audience?
Industry - how different areas of the media operate; how industry is regulated
Audience - how texts target particular audiences, and how audiences interact with texts
Representation - how are representations of different social groups constructed?Â

I will be posting a series of tasks and activities here designed to get you ready for Media Studies in September!
We also highly recommend our exam board's text book - this is a great way to prepare, and also to help you with revision later in the course.
