May 2021 at BGR witnessed a few interesting events amidst end semester examinations and buzzing activities of admissions for the new academic year 2021-22. The campus, although seemed quiet with subtle preparations for examinations coupled with yet another lockdown imposed for the whole period, nevertheless, undeterredly crossed all the scheduled milestones with poise and persistence!

The Guest for the Inauguration on May 3rd 2021, was Prof. (Dr) A.R. Dubey who gave the inaugural address, followed by a session on Emotional Healing by Dr. Apar Avinash Saoji, Principal, School of Yoga and Naturopathic Medicine, Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana, S Vyasa University, Bangalore. Dr. Apar was sharing the ways of dealing the emotions and the idea that situations decide the emotions of individuals.
On 4th of May 2021, Dr. Vibhash Kumar, Assistant Professor and AD- TLC, Ramanujan College, University of Delhi was explaining about the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) which has separate guidelines for different subjects like medicine, management, etc. and the importance of anonymity.
Day 3 on 5th May 2021 saw Dr. Arul Murugan V, Assistant Professor, Dept of Commerce, Pondicherry University, Karaikal Campus who spoke on the writing Proposal for funded projects and shared a model IMPRESS project
Dr. Yavana Rani, Professor and Principal Investigator – ICSSR MRP, Centre for Management Studies – CMS, Jain Deemed to be University was the resource person on 6th May 2021 who explained the difference between Grant and funding.
Day 5 on 7th May 2021 had Collaborative Mooc Courses- Swayam by Dr Vinay M, Asst Professor, School of Sciences, Christ (Deemed to be University), Bangalore touched upon creating MOOC courses through swayam platform and strongly encouraged people to download Google Primer app in mobiles as it provides short versions of concepts of management that can be learned at a quick pace.
He also touched upon an area like gamification where learning happens through game.
On 14th May 2021, The concluding session of the Queer Ecologies Conference 2021 ended with an engaging discussion. The guest speaker for the session titled ‘Queering the Garden: Migration, Indigeneity and Memory in Art Installations by Maria Thereza Alves, Beatriz Cortez and Rafa Esparza’, was Dr. Lenka Filipova. Her works revolve around contemporary environmental writing and eighteenth-century travel writing.She analysed the art installation by Maria Thereza Alvarez, ‘Seeds of Change’ where she posited the question “at what moment do these seeds become ‘native’?
The ‘Nomad 13’ and ‘The Memory of Insertion Capsule’ by artist Beatrice Cortez and Rafa Esparaza which housed a garden of plants indigenous to the Americas cultivated by the Inca, Maya and Aztec civilisations were also discussed.
The concluding Question and Answer session further helped us deconstruct and redefine ‘nature/culture’ and the complex narratives embedded in migration, colonialism and modernisation of our environment
A critical inquiry into the ways we engage with food in pandemic — all the way from its origin and production to its final setting on the table — is crucial to make sense of the time and space we live in. The Department of English and Cultural Studies at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bangalore, India attempted to facilitate discussions on Food in/of Pandemic by organizing a two-day International Conference (Online).
Through a pre-conference interactive workshop held on 6th May, Dr. Jennifer Meta Robinson, Professor of Practice and Anthropologist, Department of Anthropology, Indiana University Bloomington, the USA focused on situating the discourse of food studies by helping the participants to find their areas of interest and encouraged them to explore and try out different approaches of research methodologies in food studies by reflecting upon all the findings and interests chosen by the participants. She conducted this workshop that helped in viewing and understanding different approaches in food studies and how to study food in/of the pandemic COVID-19.
Following the inaugural ceremony, the keynote address for the conference 'Food in/of Pandemic' was delivered by Dr. Bryce Evans, Associate Professor, School of Arts and Humanities, Liverpool Hope University, UK, on May 10, 2021. Prof Evans' presentation and address unpacked multiple social and cultural themes in which to study and locate food, through a visual mode of representation by using photographs narrativizing food
The session ‘Food Sovereignty & Security’ had paper presentations with Dr. Gaana moderating the session. The morning session of the second day of the International Conference on May 11, 2021 on the theme ‘Foodways and Identity Discourses’ constituted four paper presentations and was moderated by Dr. Anil Joseph Pinto, Associate Professor & Registrar, CHRIST (Deemed to be University).
The theme of the third paper presentation session of the third day of the International Conference was ‘Food Practices and Cultural Memory’. moderated by Dr. Anna Varghese, Assistant Professor of History at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bannerghatta Road Campus, Bangalore, India. The theme of the fourth paper presentation session of the fourth day of the International Conference was ‘Narrativizing Food in/of Pandemic.’ moderated by Dr. Arya. P.V., Assistant Professor of English at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bannerghatta Road Campus, Bangalore.
‘Gastronomy and Cultural Commodification’ was the theme of the fifth paper presentation session and the final event of the fourth day of the International Conference, moderated by Dr. Dishari Chattaraj, Assistant Professor of English at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bannerghatta Road Campus, Bangalore.
