The Extension Project entitled “Vermicompost Sieving Device Training and 4H AIYFAWA Vermiculture Management System” is an extension project of the faculty of Information Technology. The project is an initiative to modernize farming through the transfer of technology and eventually help in sustainable agriculture. The 4H AIYFAWA used to practice vermicomposting and has a small vermi house for vermiculture which is currently not in use. The association are also having financial problems with fertilizers because of its high prices. With this, the project team decided to help association to revive the association’s vermiculture and vermicomposting, hence the proposal of the extension project.
The extension project will include the construction of a semi-concrete vermi house, trainings on the production of vermi products, and trainings on how to use the vermicompost sieving device and the Vermiculture Management System, as well the benefits and possible impacts of the management system. The trainings, seminars, and monitoring will be conducted by the IT faculty and selected IT students (preferably those who are OJT). Experts in vermiculture from the College of Agriculture, CPSU will also be invited as resource speakers.
Some of the Sustainable Development Goals by the UN serve as the foundation for this extension project. These include the SDG 2, which aims to eliminate world hunger and promote sustainable agriculture; SDG 12.4 which aims to achieve the environmentally sound management of all wastes; and the SDG 9, which promotes industry, innovation, and infrastructure, by incorporating renewable and modern technology.
