Did you know the Green Mountain Boys -the group of militia men who helped out in the Capture of Fort Ticonderoga- actually didn’t like Colonel Benedict Arnold, even though he was a big help in the success of the capture? This is what happened before, during, and after the Capture of Fort Ticonderoga.
Fort Ticonderoga was originally named Fort Carillon and was built by french settlers, who built it in 1755, on the shore of Lake Champlain in New York. This was so they could easily travel to Canada or the Hudson river Valley if they needed to. In July, 1758, the British attempted to override the French at Fort Carillon, but their attempt failed and along with many bad injuries. But, they came back strong a year a later and under the command of General Jeffrey Amherst. They won the battle and claimed the fort. When they won, they renamed Fort Carillon and named it Fort Ticonderoga which actually means “between two waters” in the Iroquois language.
During the actual capture of Fort Ticonderoga, the Green Mountain Boys, Ethan Allen, and Benedict Arnold led a sneak attack on the British Fort very early in the morning while everyone else was asleep. They charged in, surprising everyone, and held the sleepy men at gunpoint, making sure they didn’t try to prevent the siege and headed for the Captain William Delaplace’s room, where he was asleep before he was woken from the intruders, still in his pajamas. His Lieutenant, Jocelyn Feltham warned him about their arrival. He soon came out, fully clothed, and surrendered the fort, handing over his sword. They then took over the fort. This was a good thing because it was the first patriotic victory of the Revolutionary War.
After the Capture of Fort Ticonderoga, the fort switched owners again. The patriots forced to evacuate and leave the fort behind because of the threat on Mount Defiance. On Mount Defiance, British General John Burgoyne had a cannon placed on top and was going to fire. After that, Fort Ticonderoga wasn’t ever used by either sides, except for the few scouting groups and using it as a place to stay between travels. Some time after the Revolution, the fort was bough 2 times and by different owners, one of the owners turned into a house, the other, a hotel. Then, Fort Ticonderoga was bought again and turned back into its original form. Now, it is a historical attraction for all to see.
The Capture of Fort Ticonderoga had exciting events that led up to the capture, events that happened during it, and the events that happened after the capture.
