Have you ever lost a battle but walked away more confident? This is what happened in the beginning stages in the Revolutionary War. Even though the Americans lost the battle they walked away more confident than the British, because the British got smacked in the face real hard by the Americans.
On June 13th, 1775 the colonist leaders found out that the British were going to send troops to the city to take the unoccupied hills around the city, if they did this they could get the territory over Boston Harbor. The Battle of Bunker Hill started because the British had territory over Boston. Overnight On June 16th the colonists fortify Breed’s Hill and Bunker Hill.
On the day of June 17, 1775 the British found out that the colonists were there. The British went up to Breed’s Hill to kill the colonists to fortify Boston Harbor. Since the Americans had fortified the hill they were prepared. The British had to attack 3 times before they got close enough to the Americans.
The third time the British attacked, the Colonists were already out of ammunition. After they were out of ammunition they started with hand to hand combat. When they started with hand to hand combat the British still had a little bit of ammunition, so they could still shoot the Americans. The Colonists ended up losing. They had to run all the way to Cambridge, to get away from the British.
As you can see the Battle of Bunker Hill was a big tragedy for the British even though they won, it was a very big tragedy because, they lost a lot of people, more than the Americans did. It was bad because they kept getting shot down by the Colonists.
