Have you ever heard of the town used as Roman forts? If not, it’s Monmouth! On June 28th, 1778 George Washington joined forces with Charles Lee, created an army and attacked the British army.
Washington and Lee joined forces to defeat the British army. Lee took permanent residence in America to join the Continental army. Charles Lee wanted to take command of Washington’s army, but they talked directly and joined forces. Lee was demanded to be second major general and follow Washington.
The British snuck up on Washington and Lee which got Washington upset. George Washington demanded Charles Lee to attack the British army’s rear. When Washington arrived, he saw Lee’s men running off of the battle field. Washington, red as a balloon, ordered the men to take the day off until he was ready to place them back in the battle line.
At the end of the day, Washington and Lee wanted equality with the British army. While having about equal forces, both tried to claim victory. George Washington and his army marched to Hudson River to join the Continental Army. The forces restarted the positions from 2 years earlier. The Americans reported back with 109 dead, 161 wounded, and 130 missing men.
The battle of Monmouth was harsh, but I am glad that George Washington walked away stronger, and more independant.
