Did you know that there was a second battle of Saratoga? The Battle of Saratoga is considered an important turning point in the American Revolution. This battle proved that the weaker and untrained American forces were strong enough to overpower the might of the British army.
The Battle of Saratoga consisted of two battles, Battle of Freeman’s Farm and The battle of Bemis Heights fought 18 days apart. The Battle of Saratoga was part of great Britain’s Campaign to isolate the rebellious New England colonies from the middle and southern colonies. It was during the Battle of Bemis Heights was tipped in the American colonies favor. On October 7, 1777 General Burgoyne make the biggest mistake that cost him the battle of Saratoga. After losing many men and supplies from the first battle General Burgoyne decided to attack the colonies again instead of retreating to a safer location. The American who suffered less casualties than the British managed to the British army into a small town of Saratoga. Surrounded by the American army the British had no choice but to surrender 10 days after the battle.
On October 17, 1777 General Burgoyne surrendered his entire army. A total of 5752 men, 42 cannons, 7000 muskets and all supplies were turned over to the Americans. British soldiers were marched to Boston. The terms of the surrender meant they were to return to England on promise not to fight again in the Revolutionary war. Some soldier did return to England, but others were sent to prison by a new congress law until the end of the war.
The success of the battle gave to colonies a much need morale boost. The colonies began to believe they could win the war and gain their independence. The victory of the Battle of Saratoga also convicted France and Spain to become American allies and provide much needed military and win the American Revolution war.
