It was a happy and busy first couple of weeks in our Pre-K/K/1 class. There is so much to learn! Each child's goals and objectives are individualized to challenge and support them just where they are.
Some children have been practicing writing their names. Others were learning upper and lower case letters. Some were practicing spelling. We all had fun building our names out of blocks.
We learned and practiced letters and sounds. Some of us were already beginning to blend sounds for reading. Others were already reading chapter books!
We pondered the question, "How can you make art that shows how a shofar sounds?"
We analyzed the shape, and then drew and cut out shofars from white paper. We colored in our shofars using colored pencils, crayons and markers.
Then we listened to the sound of the shofar being blown. In small groups, the children described the sound.
“It sounds pointy and sharp.”
“It sounds like it goes like an arrow, just straight.”
“It goes out in all directions.”
The children cut and shaped colored paper to try to imitate through art the sound of the shofar.
We practiced counting and 1-to-1 correspondence, counting, and making numbers in different ways.
All the children journal every day at their own level.
We celebrated three Shabbats, one birthday and Snack-in-the-Sukkah! That means we have been doing a lot of baking - so far we have baked challah three times, and birthday cupcakes complete with sprinkles, and cupcakes to eat and share in the sukkah, too!
