Wow! February just blew by! With friends at Zimmer and others at home for virtual learning, and still others out of town for days at a time, each day was a little bit different and never seemed to be what we expected. Even so, we had lots of time to expand our friendships, to learn and make progress, and to explore winter up close and in person!
We celebrated the 100th Day of School
We created a music video called Winter Cheer .
Our journal complexity has built since September, but the children take it in stride!
We journal every day. The calendar, date, temperature and thermometer help the children to review basic general knowlege. Then, there is also reading, writing and traditional math...so much to learn and review in one place!
Reading is such a big part of our day. It's very exciting to see the children defining themselves as "readers."
The classroom is filled with toys and activities that encourage problem solving, designing, building, experimenting, exploring and making. The children just see toys, but the things they discover and learn are AMAZING!
For our unit on simple machines, the children learned about levers, gravity and domino chain reactions. They were challenged to create a domino run that had at least one lever in their design.
They also learned about wheels and axles and then each designed their own car.
They keep on practicing because in March, we will combine the cars, the levers and the dominoes as we create a marble run with recycled materials and connect everything together. Stay tuned...
We practice math in so many ways. The children have been practicing counting, adding and subtracting to 15 (first graders go to 30), and lots of ways to write number families and number sentences.
This past month, we learned all about our solar system. From solar flares to dwarf planets and everything in between, the children had so much fun in their space exploration.
The glow-in-the-dark space puzzle is great favorite!
In the make-your-own-planet activity, the children used their knowledge of the solar system to discuss and describe a planet of their own imagination!
The children love using the app SkyView to find out where the moon and planets are at different times of the day!
Whether it's challah, cupcakes or chocolate chip cookies (with a careful 10 chips in each cookie) the class practices mathematical concepts and skills, and scientific thinking as we measure and mix our ingredients, mold our dough, add our sprinkles or chips, and set the timer for baking!
The art projects this month were directly connected to the Science curriculum, but also taught and practiced the skills and terms integral to creating artworks.
The children used chalk pastels to create two different works:
Aurora Borealis over the mountains
One of the planets in our solar system
You will see more of our landscape art in the March Blog!
The children used beautiful colors to recreate the northern lights, Aurora Borealis, above.
The children each chose a planet that inspired them to create in chalk pastel on black paper. They cut out a circle, matched colors, and worked from a photograph of the planet.
Here they come and there they go! Onward to March and another fun-filled month of school!
