Identifying the project: One day when we were outside, the children noticed how the sky and the ground met in the middle behind the trees. We learned that this was called the "horizon line." In our books, we looked at photographs and illustrations, and were able to find the horizon line in many of the pictures. We observed that objects in the pictures that seemed to be closer were bigger, and those that were smaller looked to be further away. We learned the terms "foreground" and "background." The children started drawing landscapes on their own, and experimenting with those features of landscapes that we had observed.
Once we knew we wanted to create landscapes, we did three projects:
We used chalk pastels to create landscapes with mountains and Aurora Borealis.
We used markers, pencils, paper and glitter glue to make magical landscapes of winter trees.
We used chalk pastels to create our favorite planets on black paper.
Finally, we were ready to choose a famous painting and recreate it in water colors and pastels.

My landscape has lots of trees. It has a lot of snow and mountains. It looks like it’s cold and empty. There are probably not a lot of people there.I think there are probably deer hiding behind the trees.
I like that it has so much blue, and that it has green trees. It looks calm.
I chose it because the sky and the mountains are beautiful. I would like to go there to go skiing.

My landscape has a lot of plants. The sky goes from the top - dark to light. It has a big white and yellow cloud. The ground is red.
I love that the land is red. I think I would feel excited to be standing in the picture because there is so much red ground and blue sky. I think there might be camels walking across the land.
I chose it because it was cool. I loved the sky with the
gi-normous cloud.

Aurora
My landscape has trees, a winding stream, hills and clouds in a blue sky. It looks like it’s nighttime because it’s all dark out and you can see lots of shadows.
I love streams, and just when it is getting dark outside.
I chose it because it is so pretty. It looks cold. If I were there, I would like to have a picnic.

It has a big rock and wehn the light slides down from the moon the light shows under the rock. The moon is just past a new moon. The trees are growing up to the moon.
The crescent moon is pretty. The light shining under the moon, the white snow and the dark part of the rock.
I chose this picture because I just loved this one. I would walk right up to the rock and play with it. I would climb up on top of the rock and sit there.

I see the ground. It looks black because there is a big red horizon line on top.It is the sunset. There is one tree and a few houses far away so they’re small.
I love that the ground is nice and dark and the sky is bright red, yellow, orange and a little bit of black.
I chose this landscape because I really really like the red, because red is my favorite color. I feel like a storm is coming, maybe a tornado, and that makes me feel a little bit scared and a little bit excited because I never saw a tornado before.

The purple and pink clouds are beautiful. The end of the water is black and the middle is blue. The trees are reflected in the water upside-down.
The pink and purple clouds are pink and purple which are my favorite colors. There’s so much beautiful sky.
I chose this landscape because it looked like it would be really hard to paint and I’m five so I can do harder stuff. It looks so calm and relaxing, I would like to take a cruise ship there and maybe I could sleep on it.

My landscape is a beach on a summer day. The water looks completely calm. There are trees on the beach. There is a lot of white sand.
I think the sky is beautiful. It looks like it’s the morning. I think it is a warm day and I would like to go there.
It almost looks like a picture taken with a camera. I like the shore. I would like to walk and swim there.
