We had so much Chanukah fun!!
This is our Chanukah and Shabbat celebration with Morah Caitlyn's Pre-K class.
We wrote and performed our own Chanukah play!
After reading lots of Chanukah stories, and after a day of improvisational dance performance in the classroom to many kinds of different music, we decided to write our own Chanukah play!

8 Little Candles
NARRATOR: It was just before Chanukah, when the problem arose.
A shopping bag broke, it was too full, I suppose.
The items from inside scattered everywhere,
And although all the items were picked up with care,
There were 8 little candles, not sure what to do.
AURORA CANDLE: The first one was purple
INDY and ADLER CANDLES: The second two were blue.
OLLY CANDLE: The third one was red
WILLIAM and JACOB CANDLES: And the fourth and fifth too.
MAYA and JEREMY CANDLES: And pink and orange were the last two.
NARRATOR: The candles were wandering lost in the dark
Their box had been broken, just outside the park
Their wicks were tattered but their colors were bright
And they looked for a safe place to go in the night.
OLLY CANDLE said: I will search over there.
WILLIAM CANDLE said: I will stay over here.
JACOB CANDLE said: We should all stay together and we’ll find our way.
INDY CANDLE said: We’ll come up with a plan to save the day!
NARRATOR: But two little candles said:
AURORA and MAYA: Now we have our chance!
AURORA CANDLE: Outside of our box, we can jump,
MAYA CANDLE: We can dance! (Dance break)
Oh Chanukah, Oh, Chanukah
Come light the menorah
Come to our party
We'll all dance the hora
Gather 'round the table
We'll give you a treat,
Dreidels to play with and latkes to eat
And while we are playing
The candles are burning low
One for each night, they shed a sweet light
To remind us of days long ago
One for each night, they shed a sweet light
To remind us of days long ago
NARRATOR: They jumped and they swirled for about half an hour.
Then JEREMY CANDLE said: Look! It’s starting to snow!
ADLER CANDLE: It’s a Chanukah snow shower!
NARRATOR: Then all together, the candles moved on
The snow was falling fast and the light was all gone
The candles couldn’t see a thing first to last
They were lost in a snowy world as 7 nights passed.
Sadly each worried something like this:
OLLY CANDLE said : Chanukah will pass,
WILLIAM CANDLE said: Our chance to glow bright.
JACOB CANDLE said: Soon it will be the very last Chanukah night.
AURORA CANDLE said: Tonight starts the eighth day
MAYA CANDLE said: It’s our turn to be lit.
INDY CANDLE said: We must find our menorah,
ADLER CANDLE said: And get right into it!
NARRATOR: So all day long, they searched up and around
And all of a sudden they heard a lovely sound.
PRE-K.
I have a little dreidel, I made it out of clay.
And when it’s dry and ready, then dreidel I shall play
Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel. I made it out of clay.
Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel. Then dreidel I shall play.
THE SHAMASH said: It was a family singing a Chanukah song!
THE CANDLES said: If we follow that music, we can’t go wrong!
NARRATOR: In a line holding hands, they followed the sound.
Up to the steps, over and around.
THE SHAMASH said: They sniffed, and together they followed
the smell.
CANDLES: Of sufganiyot, and latkes as well.
NARRATOR: They slipped in the door - it was almost sundown
The candles saw the family, each member with a frown
They had run out of candles, they couldn’t light the light
The menorah would be dark on this last Chanukah night.
The candles jumped up, smiling a lot!
They filled the menorah, each empty slot.
The family looked on with surprised, happy faces
To see all the candles right there in their places.
THE SHAMASH said: Then everyone sang the blessings
as the candles were lit.
Bah-rookh ah-tah ha-a-shem eh-loh-kay-noo meh-lekh
hah-oh-lahm ah-sher ki-deh-shah-noo beh-mitz-voh-tahv
veh-tzee-vah-noo leh-hahd-lik nayr kha-noo-kah
Bah-rookh ah-tah ha-a-shem eh-loh-kay-noo meh-lekh
hah-oh-lahm sheh-ah-sah nee-sim lah-ah-voh-tay-noo
bah-yah-mim hah-haym biz-mahn hah-zeh
CANDLES: The dreidel was spun as the children played with it.
SHAMASH: They ate the delicious food by the candles’ light
ALL: And celebrated Chanukah for the whole eighth night.
Educational Theater experiences bring so much to the Early Childhood classroom:
MEMORIZATION is an important skill for future academic learning, and students who practice memorization have been found to be more able to grasp deeper concepts later.
Being in a play is a MINDFUL ACTIVITY, helping students to focus on being in the moment.
Plays are a natural way to develop RESILIENCE and PERSEVERANCE, and realize potential, as one of the most important features is that you do the task of rehearsal/performance many times over. Each time, the children can strive to do a little better.
Plays are all about TEAMWORK. Children learn to work together and depend on each other.
We made dreidels out of FIMA clay!
First, we took a "field trip" over to the amazing dreidel collection in the Chabad Libray.
Then, we made, molded, baked and tested our own amazing dreidels.
We made latkes!
Ingredients:
3 cups of grated potato
1/2 cup of minced onion
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 cup oil (and extra to grease the pan.
2 eggs
1/2 cup of matzoh meal (as needed)
We baked ours for 40 minutes at 350°.
