"Behavior" That is Challenging to Us
“Behavior” that is challenging to adults has been a factor in education since the creation of learning environments. Why? Because learning is a social process that includes interaction among individuals. When students' actions fall outside what is expected, we often resort to labeling and reacting, perceiving the behavior as naughty, a choice, manipulation, or other assumptions that place the responsibility on the child to change. In education, we are tasked with providing information to help students access, engage, and make progress. In special education, this goal drives our services. To do this we have to navigate how children show up and the way they interact. Join us to explore how we can enhance or pivot our current practices and let go of those that may no longer be effective. If we don’t change, nothing changes.
