Davis Joint USD has been on their UDL journey for a few years. As they deepen their practice, they are connecting UDL to other district-wide goals, including reducing the impact of implicit bias on student achievement and belonging and designing learning experiences aligned to their Graduate Profile.
The Davis Joint Unified School District's Theory of Action centers on implementing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and mitigating bias. Key actions include creating a systematic staff support system with monthly professional development, collaborating with UDL and bias experts, initiating UDL rollout with a focus on "why" and "how," maintaining consistent direction and messaging, and supporting leaders in becoming lead learners of UDL. These actions are anticipated to result in:
students making choices in learning (measured by observation walks and student reporting)
shared responsibility between administrators and teachers (measured by admin focus groups)
UDL permeating educational language, and family engagement in decision-making.
Ultimately, the desired outcomes are improved student outcome data (academics, A-G, Youth Truth), establishing a culture where all students are believed to achieve (measured by Youth Truth data and focus groups), empowered teachers, and equitable student experiences across campuses (measured by disciplinary and academic data).
Systematic monthly professional development for all staff
Learning walks with focus on evidence of UDL in action
Creating intentional connections between UDL and anti-bias work and graduate profile
Supporting site leaders and TOSAs to be lead learners
Student outcome data, including A-G completion
Student perceptions of learning and belonging using UDL Student Perception Survey, Empathy Interviews, and Youth Truth survey data
Equitable experiences across campuses, grade levels, content areas, and identities as evidenced through empathy interview, disciplinary data, and decreased referrals for Tier 2 and 3 supports
