The Robla School District team have focused on wraparound supports to improve teaching and learning at Taylor Elementary as a case study for district-wide practices.
Implementing Freedom School: We are integrating the Freedom School program into our Expanded Learning Program to bring culturally supportive practices into the learning experience.
Strengthening community outreach: We have a dedicated Community Outreach Assistant focused on connecting with African American students and families, providing academic support, and strengthening school–home communication.
Using assessment data: We are supporting the administration and use of meaningful interim assessment data to inform instructional decision-making.
Improve attendance for African American Students
Decrease in discipline referrals for African American Students
We joined the African American Student Success Network (AASSN) in 2023 to better understand the significant disparities we were seeing in chronic absenteeism, family engagement, and academic assessment outcomes for our African American students. To focus our problem of practice, we chose to go deep in one context by centering our work on a single site’s community—Taylor Elementary—and using a community school approach to strengthen support for students and families.
