The PUSD team are examining disparities in engagement and achievement to decrease suspension rates and improve lagging academic achievement for their Black students.
Helping students feel seen in the classroom: Over the past two years, the PUSD team have worked to incorporate culturally responsive teaching strategies in the classroom.
Changing the way teachers are supported: Coaches and principals support teachers with an observation tool that allows for guided feedback aligned to updated expectations
Looking at the data early: Examining discipline data as an early indicator of academic engagement and achievement
Decrease in suspension rates for Black students
Increase in Math/ELA scores as measured by district iReady data and CAASPP proficiency scores
Following their AASSN work in successfully reducing the overidentification of Black students in specific categories of special education, the Pittsburg Unified team have expanded their problem of practice to address broader disparities in student opportunities and outcomes.
