What different types of qualifications are there? 

GCSE 

We offer many straight GCSE subjects; these are exam based and include:

Occupational Studies


We offer occupational studies qualifications. These are practical-based subjects and include:

Salon Skills Hair

Performing Arts

Hospitality

Construction

Engineering 


Many of these qualifications are valuable in studying the vocational practical-based career pathways. 




BTEC

We offer BTEC qualifications at level 2.  A distinction* grade is equivalent to a GCSE A*; a distinction is equivalent to a GCSE grade A; a merit is equivalent to a GCSE grade B; and a pass is equivalent to a GCSE grade C. 

There are options in many local schools and further eudcational colleges to study the level 3 BTEC qualifications.

OCN

We offer a range of OCN qualifications within the school. These qualifications are equivalent to a GCSE grade C. However, please note that if your child wishes to study A Levels they should only consider choosing a maximum of 2 OCN qualifications. *Effective September 2025.*

Prince's Trust


Prince's Trust is an equivalent qualification at GCSE. This is recognised by further education institutions and can be used to apply for Post-16 courses at these institutions. The qualification is recognised as the equivalent of a C qualification at GCSE. This qualification would be beneficial to students who would like to follow a vocational pathway.

Preparation for Adult Life (PAL) 


This is a vocational pathway offered by CCEA. This is the non-exam equivalent to the GCSE study of Learning for Life and Work. It follows the same specification of study; however, students will showcase their evidence in portfolio form as opposed to formal examination. We offer the Level 2 certificate at the college which, when passed, is regarded as a GCSE C grade.
