In GCSE Spanish students will continue to develop their ability to recognise, understand, and confidently use Spanish language to communicate clearly and accurately, through speaking and writing. Students will also develop their listening and reading skills and all 4 of these skills are vital and equally important to success at GCSE Spanish.
Students will return to some topics covered in Key Stage 3 and will travel beyond language they already know to explore the topics in more detail. New topics that are very relevant in today's society and increasingly more important to students such as protecting the environment, social media usage and future study and career plans, allow students to build upon the important skill of expressing and supporting their opinions.
The examination element to GCSE Spanish takes place at the end of Year 12 and we follow the CCEA Spanish specification. Students will complete a Speaking assessment with their teacher in April/May of Year 12 and will complete Listening, Reading and Writing assessments in May/June of Year 12. The Speaking assessment is the same level of challenge for all students and includes one element which students can prepare for in school prior to the assessment, whilst the other 2 elements remain unseen. The Listening, Reading, and Writing assessments can be tailored to Foundation or Higher tier of entry, depending on where each student's strengths lie.
Studying Spanish at GCSE allows students to study a subject that is creative, fun, and allows for exploring Spanish language social media, TV, radio and film as just a few examples, enabling students to see into a culture and society that is rich, fascinating and will develop skills that many employers and further education institutions will find very desirable, and will make future travel incredibly rewarding and enjoyable!
