The conceptualization, detailed structuring of the lesson plan (Into, Through, Beyond), and the drafting of the theoretical framework analysis were completed with the support of Gemini, a Large Language Model from Google.
Voicemod is a Generative AI tool for real-time audio transformation. We will explore here the benefits for the EFL classroom.
Helping students’ Anxiety: One of the best uses that we can give this tool is helping our students reduce their affective filter. We’ve seen teens, self-conscious about their pronunciation, saying that they don’t want to read or participate in class. Well, with this kind of tool we help them hide behind a digital voice and we allow them to experiment with voices far from theirs. This creates a safe environment for students for them to experiment free of judgment, which increases their oral confidence (Edmett, A., et al., 2023).
Responsible AI Usage: The fact that Voicemod is a deepfake-style tool gives teachers the chance to reflect upon the responsible use of AI, fostering digital citizenship and awareness. With older students we can discuss the ethical line between creative expression and deception. This will probably prove to be a crucial principle that students should incorporate for their professional and academic future.
CALLing Creative Production: The activities that this tool offers are aligned with the creation of original content, which makes students move from consumers to producers. By using Voicemod to record their final piece, they are engaging in the "Producing Electronic Materials" (Hockly & Dudeney, 2008) in a highly multimodal way. AI adds the essential emotional layer, transforming a simple text into an audio-art piece.
Differentiated Instruction: Another important contribution of this to the classroom is the assistance it can provide those students who struggle with oral performance or have speech difficulties, Voicemod plays a big role in Assistive Technology (Delaney, 2016). It allows them to participate fully in high-stakes speaking tasks by providing a scaffold; thus the unit becomes accessible and inclusive for all learners, including those with Special Educational Needs (Hockly, 2017).
