Context
The following lesson plan you’ll read is one meant for teenage students in their third year. The lesson works to familiarise and start the process for a set of lessons on social media awareness. I have a group of 9 students who study communication at their secondary school, and I felt this tool could be of much use to them.
Frameworks
The thought behind the plan follows the PLANIED framework. One of the main dimensions of the PLANIED framework is that of autonomous useof technology, which will be developed through activities that will require students to work without the constant support of a teacher. We will also be fostering proper use of information and representation and critical thinking by having the students learn how social media posts are made, what they look like and more. We’ll also be attempting to be in accordance to the triple E framework developed by Professor Liz Kolb. During the production of this lesson, the teacher payed special attention to the suggested questions to check whether the lesson fulfils the three main standards of technology inclusion for education. The lesson extends learning by providing real-life skills (social media content creation), engages students (students are active, social learners) and enhances learning (lesson couldn’t occur with traditional tools). For the lesson, the main tool the students will encounter and learn to dominate is Scrip AI. This is a generative AI writing tool for different social media apps. It can develop full scripts, hooks and content ideas.
Inclusivity
The inclusion of the tool in this lesson attempts to meet different students at their current levels, as the challenge will depend on the student's level and interest. The use of a digital tool allows for certain accessibility features to be used in coordination with other tools, such as a text-to-speech reader for students with vision impairments or reading difficulties. The tool is also easy to use autonomously, which will encourage students to grow their confidence while doing work by themselves. I haven't been able to find support or comments of any kind from other educators on this tool. However, many news articles covering this area of AI claimed things like "This is instantly more interesting, and points to a future where programs like ChatGPT don’t actually write movies, but generate plot ideas that could help human screenwriters out of trouble. However, there are still limitations." (The Guardian, 2023). Other publications seem to agree that idea/script generating AI can be of use to writers, although with drawbacks involved.
Lesson Plan
Year: 3rd year
Number of Students: 9 approx.
Time allotted: 40 mins
WARMER
Students will look at three different Instagram posts. The first will be a picture with a caption, the second a short-length video (under a minute) and the last one a longer video (over a minute). In teams, the students will make a pros and cons list on each of the formats with the intention of sending the public information on an event.
WEB
St will first have to read the provided tutorial you can find below. Afterwards, they will choose one of their school's events and compile information on it. Afterwards, in three big groups, each of them will have to use Scrip AI to create a post to tell other students about the event.
The students will receive some guiding questions of information they might want to include in their video/post
When is the event?
Where is the event taking place?
What time is the event?
What is the purpose or theme of the event?
Who will be participating?
Which subjects will be involved, and in what way?
Whar can you do at the event as a visitor?
WHAT’S NEXT
Sts will post their publications made with the support of Scrip AI and discuss what they thought of the process and the tool. They will be asked to mentioned strengths and weaknesses and the following week they will look at the statistics and compare their results.
