Unit of Work: Be my Guest!
Form: 4th year of Secondary School
Level: intermediate
Duration of the lesson: 80 minutes
This is not the first lesson of the unit. Students have been working with hotel vocabulary in previous lessons
Warmer
For the purpose of activating prior knowledge, students will engage in a Bingo game featuring vocabulary related to hotels. In order to make the game a little more challenging, the teacher will read the defintion of the word, instead of the word itself.
Example: for the word 'LOBBY', the teacher will read 'The main entrance area of a hotel where guests are greeted'
When a student completes their card, the game finishes and the class will move into the 'Web' stage.
Web
Students will explore Explorica, an educational travel company that offers guided tours and travel experiences for students and teachers. This website provides a vast variety of hotels and their services, depending on your country of destination. Students will read the hotel descriptions and take a look at their homepages (at least 3). They will fill in a chart (provided by the teacher) with all the interesting features these hotels offer that they would include in their own hotel
Hotel Name: (they will think of a new name)
Type of Hotel:

Façade:

Once they are done, they will create their own hotel and write a description of it, including the information of the chart ( type of hotel, accommodations, location, façade, etc.) as if they were advertising it to tourists. They must include at least ten words or phrases from the Bingo game played previously.
Students can work individually or in small groups!
Example:
Welcome to The Sunny Hotel!
The Sunny Hotel is a cozy place located near the beach, featuring a bright and welcoming façade with large windows and vibrant colors that reflect the sunny atmosphere. The lobby is filled with comfortable seating and tropical decorations, creating a warm and inviting ambiance.
The hotel offers a variety of accommodations for all types of guests. You can choose a single room with a comfortable bed or a double room perfect for friends or couples. Each room has free Wi-Fi, a TV, and air conditioning, all designed with modern furnishings and a relaxing color palette.
Guests can enjoy a delicious breakfast included with their stay, served in the cheerful dining area. The hotel also has a beautiful swimming pool surrounded by lush greenery and lounge chairs, perfect for soaking up the sun. Plus, the friendly front desk staff is ready to help you with anything you need. Come and relax at The Sunny Hotel!
Students will now create the 3D animated version of their hotel using Anything World. In order to do so, they will provide the tool with the description they have previously written as a prompt.
What's Next?
As a closing activity, students will share their experiences and thoughts on the tool. They will discuss whether it was intuitive and easy to use, or if they encountered any difficulties. They can also reflect on whether they liked how the tool represented the information based on the prompts they entered. This reflection will allow students to assess their own performance, and provide the teacher with valuable feedback for future lessons.
Students will present their hotel creations in the next class. Each presentation should include details about room types, facilities, and amenities. After all presentations, students will vote for the best establishment based on creativity, design, and features. Voting will be conducted by show of hands.
Additionally, students will rate their classmates' hotels using a star system and should account for their choices by providing oral suggestions and feedback.
