Year 2 is a pivotal year in your child's educational journey, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of it. Our dedicated team of teachers and staff has been hard at work preparing an enriching and engaging curriculum that will inspire your child's curiosity, foster their love for learning, and help them reach new milestones in their academic and personal development.
At BSJ, our goal is to ensure that your child has an exceptional learning experience. Achieving this requires a strong partnership between parents and teachers. The Year 2 team is eager to support and guide your child through their unique learning journey, and we look forward to working together to help your child achieve success.

We follow the English National Curriculm (ENC) for English and Maths and we use the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) unit overviews to plan our Eplore topics.
In our Colour Chaos art unit, children will study the work of famous abstract artists, including Piet Mondrian, Mark Rothko, Paul Klee, Jackson Pollock, Robert & Sonia Delaunay, and Wassily Kandinsky, and use these inspirations to create collages, drip paintings, and a final colourful abstract piece.
In our Treasure Island unit, children will develop their geography and design & technology skills as they explore the features of islands and create their own imaginative maps. They will learn to use map symbols and design and construct 3-dimensional islands displaying both human and physical features.
In our Green Fingers unit, children will explore the wonderful world of plants and minibeasts while developing their science and inquiry skills. They will learn about how plants grow, investigate life cycles, and observe minibeasts in their habitats to understand their important roles in nature.
In our Magic Toymaker unit, children will step into the world of toys past and present, developing their history and science skills. They will explore the history of toys, comparing how toys have changed over time, and classify materials to understand why different toys are made the way they are.

Here are some links to support with Maths skills.
Read Together Daily: Spend time reading with your child every day. Read the levelled reading books we send home but also let them pick books they enjoy to make it fun.
Ask Questions: After reading, ask simple questions about the story to help them understand and think about what they have read.
Sound Out Words: Encourage your child to sound out words they don’t know, helping them use phonics skills they are learning at school.
Practice Sight Words: Work on sight words (common words like "the" and "and") to help them recognise words quickly. These words usually can’t be decoded using phonics and to aid fluency children should be able to read them on sight.
Create a Reading Routine: Set aside a special time each day for reading so it becomes a fun habit, like before bed or after school.
Use Environmental Print: Encourage reading everyday signs, labels, or menus while out and about to show that reading is everywhere.
Praise Their Efforts: Celebrate their reading achievements, no matter how small, to boost their confidence and motivation to keep reading.
Make Reading Interactive: Use different voices for characters, and let them act out parts of the story to make reading more engaging and fun.
Read the same books again: We will be sending 5 books home at a time, these books should not only be read once. Each time you read the book focus on a different skill from the list above. E.g one day focus on picking out all the ‘tricky words’, the next day focus on asking comprehension questions etc.
