The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum provides the foundation for children’s learning from birth to five years old. It ensures that children are kept safe, healthy, and happy while developing essential skills. The curriculum focuses on seven key areas: communication and language, physical development, personal, social, and emotional development, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design. Through play-based learning, children explore, create, and build positive relationships. Regular assessments help track progress and meet individual needs. Our aim? To give every child the best start in their educational journey.
In Years 1 and 2, children focus on developing foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. They learn to apply phonics to decode words, read common exception words, and develop reading fluency and comprehension. Writing skills include forming letters, spelling simple words, and constructing short sentences with basic punctuation and grammar. Mathematics lessons cover number recognition, basic addition and subtraction, simple problem-solving, and gradually introduce concepts such as multiplication and division, building on their numerical understanding and problem-solving abilities. These early years are crucial for establishing a strong foundation for future learning.
In Years 3 and 4, children enhance their reading, writing, and mathematical skills. Reading focuses on improving fluency, comprehension, and understanding a wide range of texts. Writing skills include forming complex sentences, using correct grammar and punctuation, and organizing ideas into paragraphs. Mathematics covers addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, alongside introducing fractions and geometric concepts. These years are crucial for developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills, building a robust foundation for future learning.
In Years 5 and 6, children further refine their reading, writing, and mathematical skills. Reading activities focus on enhancing fluency, comprehension, and understanding diverse texts, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Writing skills advance to include complex sentence structures, appropriate use of grammar and punctuation, and effective paragraphing. In mathematics, pupils tackle more sophisticated topics such as fractions, decimals, percentages, and advanced problem-solving. These years aim to prepare students for secondary education by solidifying their knowledge, fostering critical thinking, and promoting effective communication skills.
