Before I began student teaching, I examined the 10th-grade StudySync curriculum at my residency. I used the EdReports Gateways -- text quality, building knowledge, and usability -- to frame my analysis. EdReports is a nonprofit organization that reviews curriculum and determines if it meets, partially meets, or does not meet expectations in preparing students for college and career readiness. I focused my analysis on the second unit of the curriculum, which was what my mentor was teaching at the time. The target text of the unit was the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel. In this presentation, I explain what the curriculum includes, the standards it focuses on, the complexity of the required texts, and its efficacy in building student knowledge. The unit was made most accessible by the modifications the English Language Arts team at my residency made.
I have included this artifact in my portfolio because it demonstrates my proficiency in reflecting critically on teaching practices and curriculum. Teachers must be able to interrogate the curriculum to tailor it to their students’ needs.
