Collaboration and holding cordial relationships are necessary skills for success in teaching and navigating life. I pride myself on the relationships I have established with my peers, mentors, and advisors. I listen actively to their concerns and make myself available when I am needed. Being a member of this professional community helped me grow in numerous ways, and I look forward to meeting more educators who I can learn from.
While I was nervous during the days leading up to Brown Summer High School, I started to find my voice as an educator as the class progressed. I realized a strength of mine is being able to make thorough reflections and clearly identify my areas for growth. With self-reflection also comes the ability to incorporate feedback. After each class throughout the summer, I had debriefing sessions with my co-teaching partner and my mentor, in which we discussed different aspects of that day’s class. We discussed areas of success and improvement, suggestions, and goals for the next day’s lesson planning. I wrote detailed notes during each debriefing session and was able to apply them to my teaching practices. I value and welcome all feedback because I know it is a necessary step for growth. Overall, my teaching experience helped me develop professionally inside and outside the classroom, and I will continue to do so as I gain more experience.
