My Captsone aimed to investigate how students create stories that deliver a larger message. My Capstone revolved around multiple core practices surrounding process writing, including Quickwrites, short writing exercises. I used this practice to prepare students for their summative assessment in which they had to write an original narrative. Quickwrites helped students build their writing stamina and served as brainstorms for potential topics to address in their narratives. In this presentation, you will find information on the source from which I adapted this practice, author Penny Kittle. You will also find an explanation of the standards this practice addresses and its purpose for my Capstone.
This practice was highly effective in my classroom, as was evident through the long stories my students wrote, ranging from 7 to 16 pages each. Students used Quickwrites to formulate a conflict and theme (a message) in their original narratives. Quickwrites are a method I plan to use throughout my future practice.Â
