Here I have included a lesson plan (materials linked within) that demonstrates my use of differentiation to support students with diverse needs. Within the lesson plan, you will find annotations written in purple in the “Differentiation” box explaining the various differentiation strategies I used: providing models, doing think-alouds, using graphic organizers, and integrating technology assistance. You will also find a “Student-specific learner factors” box in which I intentionally focus on three students with IEPs in the class and explain how the lesson plan meets their needs.
This lesson asked students to focus on the writing revision process using the RADaR strategy on a draft of their end-of-unit analysis essay. I taught students to this procedure because writing and revising are essential, transferable skills in and out of the school environment. Knowing how to write well fosters active citizenship and sets students up for success in the real world. After introducing and modeling RADaR, students individually used RADaR on a sample paragraph, discussed it in groups, then did RADaR on their essay drafts. Students reflected on their revisions at the end of class through an exit ticket.
I have included this artifact in my portfolio because it demonstrates my proficiency and knowledge in differentiating instruction and making content accessible to all students. It also reflects my strengths in lesson preparation, evident through the worksheets I made, the multiple example paragraphs I wrote, and the scripted think-aloud I included.
